How to Prepare Your Lincoln for Winter

How to Prepare Your Lincoln for Winter

Cold weather asks more of every part of your vehicle, from the battery to the wiper blades. A little preparation in the fall helps your Lincoln start easily, keep the windshield clear and grip the road once the snow arrives.

The good news is that most winter prep is quick. Lincoln's owner's manuals list simple checks you can do at home, plus a few items that are best left to a trained technician. Here is a clear, step-by-step look at what to check and why each step matters.

  1. Start With Your Tires

Tires are your only contact with the road, so they come first. Lincoln recommends checking the pressure in every tire at least once a month and before long trips. Cold air lowers tire pressure, so this habit matters even more in winter.

Use a real tire gauge rather than the pressure shown in the information display. A tire can lose up to half its air and still not look flat. You will find the recommended cold inflation pressure on the tire label on the B-pillar or the edge of the driver's door. Inflate to that number, even if it is lower than the maximum printed on the tire.

Check pressure when the tires are cold. After more than three minutes or about 2 km of driving, the reading climbs by roughly 4 psi (27.6 kPa). If you swap to a winter set this season, have each tire set to the pressure on your tire label.

  1. Look After the 12-Volt Battery

Engines take longer to start at low temperatures, and a weak battery is often the first thing to give up on a cold morning. Lincoln recommends checking the battery connections every six months and cleaning them if needed.

Keep the top of the battery clean and dry, and make sure the cables are tight on the terminals. If you see corrosion, a technician can remove the cables and clean the terminals with a wire brush and a solution of baking soda and water. Your Lincoln has a maintenance-free battery, so it never needs added water.

  1. Use the Engine Block Heater (If Equipped)

An engine block heater warms the engine coolant before you start. That helps the engine start in deep cold and lets the climate system deliver warm air sooner. Lincoln recommends testing the block heater before winter so you know it works when you need it.

Plug it into a grounded 110-volt outlet, use the shortest cord possible and never chain several cords together. Keep the plug connections dry, do not close the hood on the cord and always unplug and stow the cord before you drive.

  • Works best when outdoor temperatures drop below -18°C
  • Reaches full temperature after about three hours, so longer use only wastes electricity
  • Uses 0.4 to 1.0 kWh of energy per hour
  • Needs a CSA- or UL-certified 16-gauge extension cord marked for outdoor use
  1. Top Up the Right Fluids

Washer fluid is easy to overlook until you run out on a slushy highway. Once temperatures fall below 5°C, Lincoln calls for washer fluid with antifreeze protection. In Canada, Lincoln specifies Motorcraft Premium Quality Windshield Washer Fluid rated to -35°C.

Check the engine oil level once a month, and have the coolant level and coolant strength checked every six months. If you live where temperatures reach -30°C or colder, ask your service advisor about the alternative engine oil Lincoln recommends to improve cold starts.

  1. Check Wipers and Lights

Shorter days and blowing snow make clear vision a priority. Look over your wiper blades for wear or damage. Dirty blades can be cleaned with washer fluid or water on a soft sponge, while worn blades should be replaced.

Lincoln also recommends checking all interior and exterior lights once a month. Clear snow and ice from headlamps and taillamps before every drive so other drivers can see you.

  1. Protect Doors, Seals and Latches

Frozen doors are a common winter frustration. Every six months, check the door weatherstrips for wear and lubricate them if needed. Make sure hinges, latches and outside locks work properly, and lubricate them as required.

Check the body and door drain holes for blockages too. Clear drains let water escape, so it is less likely to freeze inside door panels.

  1. Adjust How You Drive on Snow and Ice

Lincoln notes that some components and systems can behave differently below about -25°C, so give your vehicle a moment to settle in on the coldest mornings. Many Lincoln models also offer Slippery and Deep Conditions drive modes for low-grip roads.

  • Drive more slowly than usual and allow extra stopping distance
  • Press the brake firmly and steadily; the anti-lock brake system works best when you do not pump the pedal
  • Press the accelerator slowly from a stop and avoid sudden changes in direction
  • Remember that all-wheel drive helps you accelerate, but it does not help you stop faster

If the rear of your vehicle starts to slide, steer in the direction of the slide until you regain control.
